Home Getting Licensed

STANDARD RETAIL LICENSE

Consumer product companies can bring value to the university community through licensed merchandise.

The standard retail license allows a company to produce merchandise bearing the trademarks of the University of Utah to sale in approved retail channels and directly to consumers. The licensing process can take anywhere from 4-10 weeks, sometimes longer, depending on a variety of factors. The application to become licensed is completed through our licensing agency, CLC.

Our Crafter Program offers an easy, cost-effective option to small business/individuals wishing to combine their unique talents with a passion for the University of Utah. This program was created to engage the campus community outside of the standard licensing program.

Crafters interested in this program are invited to review the following requirements and complete the Crafter Application. The University of Utah is the sole and exclusive owner of all trademarks, names, and logos in reference to the University; therefore, reserves the right to grant permission, as well as protect and enforce the use of its marks.

Items not allowed as part of the Crafter Program

  • Apparel, headwear, decals/stickers, clothing accessories, and any product with pre-manufactured components.
  • The Trademarks & Licensing Office retains the authority to determine whether products falling outside of these specified categories qualify as genuinely handcrafted for the purpose of our licensed crafter program.

Requirements to qualify for the Crafter Program

  • Must obtain permission and approval prior to using the University of Utah trademarks on any product.
  • Products must be crafted individually by hand, and not by means of mass production.
  • Enter into a one year contract.
  • $100 per year fee due at the time of application. An additional 10% royalty fee is applicable to gross sales of over $1,000.
  • May only sell items directly to individuals at festivals, fairs, events, etc. No wholesales or sales to any third-party retailers are permitted. Consignment programs are permissible, however, the University of Utah Campus Store/Bookstore/Red Zones do NOT participate in consignment programs.
  • Sales may not exceed $5,000 OR 500 units, whichever comes first, in one contract year. If sales do exceed either amount, a standard license will be required.

USE OF IMAGES

Photographs & Video Footage

The Trademarks & Licensing Department oversees the use of still and moving images for the University. These images are usually pictures or films containing copyright or trademark content about the University of Utah. The use of all film and pictures bearing the trademarks of the University of Utah, or in which the institution holds the copyright, must be approved prior to any use. The most common type of request is for athletic film or pictures. All requests for still and moving images, regardless of content, should be directed to Getty Images.
In cases where the University does not own the copyright to the film being used but their trademarks still appear, permission can be received by contacting Getty Images as well.
For internal employee image requests, we utilize PhotoShelter. Contact Us and we can help you.
The athletics department issues press credentials for those authorized to take pictures or film of Utah Athletics events. When issued a credential, the bearer agrees to the terms and conditions  listed on the back.
